Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
1 Samuel 30:6
Whenever my faith needs fortification, I “strengthen myself in the Lord.” First Samuel 30 shows me how to do it. David is in a terrifying situation, but although “David was greatly distressed… [he] strengthened himself in the Lord.” Over and over, he reminded his weak faith of the wondrous things God had done for him in the past. So for me, I strengthen myself in the Lord whenever I remember how Jesus has helped me through decades of paralysis. I recall times when his promises came shining through, and I repeat my hope out loud, reciting Bible promises I have memorized. Christ will never give me a cross so heavy that it outweighs his grace. And the same is true for you. So stay hopeful and remind yourself of all that God has done for you. Today is your fresh chance to become stronger in the Lord.
