Senate Republican Leader Issues Statement on Passage of Senate Redistricting Map
Senate Democrats cave to Speaker of the House and Governor
SANTA FE – The New Mexico Senate today passed a redistricting map for the Senate on a party-line vote, with all Republicans voting in opposition.
Senate Republican Leader, Senator Greg Baca, pictured above, (District 29-Bernalillo and Valencia), issued the following statement in response to the Senate’s actions:
“In the Hispanic community, we have a phrase for what happened in the New Mexico Senate this week—sin verguensa” In what can only be described as a shameful act of partisanship and prejudice, the White progressive leaders of the Senate broke their word and needlessly targeted two Hispanic senators. Despite commitments to honor the will of the voters, especially in minority-majority districts, the Democratic leaders of the Senate folded to the pressures of the Speaker of the House and the Governor. The result of this weak and dishonest leadership is the dilution of Hispanic influence and representation in the New Mexico Legislature.”
“All is not lost, however. Nationally, Hispanics are increasingly voting Republican and walking away from a Democratic Party that no longer represents them or their best interests. When Hispanics in New Mexico begin to flex our political muscle, the Democrats’ efforts to solidify their power grip on our state with these maps will quickly flop. The future of New Mexico is bright because the future of New Mexico is Republican.”
The Senate map will now head to the House of Representatives for consideration.
