It is another beautiful day here in Albuquerque where it is in the mid 20’s at about 7:30 a.m. and a slight wind gives us a windchill in the mid teens. We’re expecting a high in the upper 40’s again under another full day of God’s glorious sunshine!
So, What Happened Today In 1790:
President George Washington Gives The First State Of The Union Address To Congress
President George Washington delivers the first State of the Union address to the assembled Congress in New York City.
Washington began by congratulating you on the present favourable prospects of our public affairs, most notable of which was North Carolina’s recent decision to join the federal republic. North Carolina had rejected the Constitution in July 1788 because it lacked a bill or rights. Under the terms of the Constitution, the new government acceded to power after only 11 of the 13 states accepted the document. By the time North Carolina ratified in November 1789, the first Congress had met, written the Bill of Rights & dispatched them for review by the states. When Washington spoke in January, it seemed likely the people of the United States would stand behind Washington’s government & enjoy the concord, peace, & plenty he saw as symbols of the nation’s good fortune.
Washington’s address gave a brief, but excellent, outline of his administration’s policies as designed by Alexander Hamilton. The former commander-in-chief of the Continental Army argued in favor of securing the common defence [sic], as he believed preparedness for war to be one of the most effectual means of preserving peace. Washington’s guarded language allowed him to hint at his support for the controversial idea of creating a standing army without making an overt request.
The most basic functions of day-to-day governing had yet to be organized, & Washington charged Congress with creating a competent fund designated for defraying the expenses incident to the conduct of our foreign affairs, a uniform rule of naturalization, & Uniformity in the Currency, Weights & Measures of the United States.
After covering the clearly federal issues of national defense & foreign affairs, Washington urged federal influence over domestic issues as well. The strongly Hamilton-influenced administration desired money for & some measure of control over Agriculture, Commerce & Manufactures as well as Science and Literature. These national goals required a Federal Post-Office & Post-Roads & a means of public education, which the president justified as a means to secure the Constitution, by educating future public servants in the republican principles of representative government.
Other Memorable Or Interesting Events Occurring On January 8 In History:
1642 – The “Father of Modern Astronomy”, “Father of Modern Physics” & “Father of Science”, Galileo Galilei dies in Italy at the age of 77;
1815 – Two weeks after the War of 1812 officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, U.S. General Andrew Jackson achieves the greatest American victory of the war at the Battle of New Orleans. In September 1814, an impressive American naval victory on Lake Champlain forced invading British forces back into Canada & led to the conclusion of peace negotiations in Ghent, Belgium. Although the peace agreement was signed on December 24, word did not reach the British forces assailing the Gulf coast in time to halt a major attack;
1821 – Confederate General James Longstreet is born near Edgefield, South Carolina. Longstreet became one of the most successful generals in the Confederate army, but after the war he became a target of some of his comrades, who were searching for a scapegoat;
1835 – The United States National Debt is $0 for the 1st & only time;
1867 – Congress overrides President Andrew Johnson’s veto of a bill granting all adult male citizen’s of the District of Columbia the right to vote. It was the 1st law in American history that granted African-American men the right to vote;
1871 – Prussian troops begin to bombard Paris during the Franco-Prussian War;
1877 – Crazy Horse & his warriors–outnumbered, low on ammunition & forced to use outdated weapons to defend themselves–fight their final losing battle against the U.S. Cavalry in Montana. Six months earlier, in the Battle of Little Bighorn, Crazy Horse & his ally, Chief Sitting Bull, led their combined forces of Sioux & Cheyenne to a stunning victory over Lieutenant Colonel George Custer & his men;
1900 – The Boers attack the British in Ladysmith South Africa but are turned away;
1908 – A subway line opens linking New York boroughs of Brooklyn & Manhattan;
1916 – Allied forces stage a full retreat from the shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, ending a disastrous invasion of the Ottoman Empire. The Gallipoli Campaign resulted in 250,000 Allied casualties & greatly discredited Allied military command. Roughly an equal number of Turks were killed or wounded;
1918 – Mississippi becomes the 1st state to ratify the 18th Amendment, (prohibition), to the United States Constitution;
1918 – In an address before Congress, President Woodrow Wilson discusses the aims of the United States in WWI & outlines his “14 points” for achieving a lasting peace in Europe;
1935 – Rock & Roll legend Elvis Presley is born in Tupelo, Mississippi;
1940 – A message from Benito Mussolini is forwarded to Adolf Hitler. In the missive, the Duce cautions the Führer against waging war against Britain. Mussolini asked if it was truly necessary “to risk all-including the regime-and to sacrifice the flower of German generations.”;
1940 – During WWII, Great Britain begins rationing sugar, butter & meat;
1946 – In competing versions of the story, what Elvis Presley really wanted for his birthday was a rifle or a bicycle—both fairly typical choices for a boy his age growing up on the outskirts of Tupelo, Mississippi. Instead, Elvis’s highly protective mother, Gladys—”She never let me out of her sight,” Elvis would later say—took him to the Tupelo Hardware Store & bought a gift that would change the course of history: a $6.95 guitar. It was January 8, 1946, & Elvis Aaron Presley was 11 years old;
1954 – President Dwight Eisenhower proposes stripping convicted communists of their U.S. citizenship;
1962 – At the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, The Mona Lisa, is exhibited for the 1st time in America;
1964 – In his State of the Union address, President Lyndon B Johnson declared an “Unconditional War On Poverty In America”. (Wonder how that worked out?!?);
1973 – In the Vietnam War, National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger & Hanoi’s Le Duc Tho resume peace talks in Paris France;
1976 – Zhou Enlai, premier of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) since 1949, dies of cancer at age 77. Zhou was second to Mao Zedong, the leader of the revolution that brought a communist regime to China, in terms of importance in the PRC. Beyond his significance as a leader of communist China, Zhou was instrumental in the negotiations that resulted in the U.S. recognition of the PRC in 1979;
1979 – The United States advises the Shah of Iran to leave Iran;
1994 – Tonya Harding won the Ladies’ U.S. Figure Skating Championship in Detroit the day after Nancy Kerrigan dropped out because of a brutal clubbing attack that had injured her knee. The U.S Figure Skating Association later stripped her of the title due to her ties to the attack;
1996 – For the 1st time in 25 years, no one is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame;
1998 – Would Trade Center bomber, Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, is sentenced to life in prison;
2009 – President Obama urged lawmakers to work with him “Day & night, on weekends if necessary” to approve the largest taxpayer-funded stimulus package ever;
2011 – U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords from Arizona is critically injured when a man goes on a shooting spree outside a Tucson-area supermarket. 6 people died & 13, including Giffords, were wounded;
2013 – It was one year ago today!
