CBS News reports today that the US Department of Energy (“DOE”) reached a huge milestone in nuclear fusion research in which a “net energy gain” was achieved for the first time in history at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The CBS News report may be viewed HERE.
Jennifer M. Granholm, Secretary, DOE, announced during today’s press conference that researchers have worked on producing fusion ignition for decades, which is the form of energy produced by stars and the sun.
Fusion, as opposed to fission, moves the US closer to a significant and clean source of energy production, without creating radioactive waste and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.

Nuclear fission technology has been around since the creation of the hydrogen bomb. Scientists believe fusion plants would produce energy more safely than today’s nuclear fission plants — if the process is mastered.
