If you ever have any doubts about our country’s direction, this story should make it clear that there is more than trouble in River City.

Newly elected California congressman Robert Garcia, a Democrat from Long Beach, California, recently announced that he would be sworn in using a first-edition Superman comic on loan from the Library of Congress.

It was not all that long ago that members of the United States Congress were exclusively sworn into office by invoking the name of the Lord when swearing the oath of office, and this was further represented by placing their hand on the bible.

Is congressman Garcia swearing an oath by the authority of a fictional comic book character? Is the congressman serious about the duties the people of Long Beach elected him to perform?

Tonight I am leading a bible study on Isaiah 30 and can’t help but see reflections of our nation in this passage, verses 9-11:

For these are rebellious people, deceitful children,
children unwilling to listen to the Lord’s instruction.
They say to the seers,
    “See no more visions!”
and to the prophets,
“Give us no more visions of what is right!
Tell us pleasant things,
    prophesy illusions.
Leave this way,
    get off this path,
and stop confronting us
with the Holy One of Israel!”

Swearing the oath of office on a popular comic book hero is a pleasant thing; holding someone to account by invoking the name of a fictional character is an illusion.

We have real trouble in our country and are unwilling to confront our rebellious and deceitful leaders and the people who elect them.
