Hello Everyone,
Did you know that our New Mexico State Constitution grants us the right to referendum on legislation? It states “THE PEOPLE RESERVE THE POWER TO DISPAPPROVE, SUSPEND AND ANNUL ANY LAW ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE, except general appropriations laws; laws providing for the preservation of the public peace, health or safety; for the payment of the public debt or interest theron, or the creation or funding of the same, except as in this constitution otherwise provided; for the maintenance of the public schools or state institutions, and local or special laws. PETITIONS DISPROVING ANY LAW other than those excepted, enacted at the last preceding session of the legislature…
I realize this is a lot to take in, but the abbreviated version is that we the people have the right to petition the legislature if they have passed laws that we believe have aggrieved us.
The First Amendment of our US Constitution state:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Why am I giving you a history lesson? It is important that you know what is going on right now in our state.
During this past legislative session several bills were passed and signed by the Governor. These bills are most egregious. They seek to promote abortion, transgender transition, strip parents of their parental influence control, does not allow communities to govern themselves and our election process is being destroyed, compromising our ability to have fair elections which impact every law. There were over 400,000 emails and phone calls to our legislators and Governor, and they fell on deaf ears because, they had an agenda and completely disregarded their constituents wishes.
At a recent City Council meeting a current sitting legislator told us that “They pass bills all they time, they know are unconstitutional, and they don’t care. They say sue us.” The citizens of New Mexico have had enough and these legislators and the Governor are going to get their wish. The people are going to exercise their right to a referendum. The bills that will be addressed are HB7, SB397, HB4, SB180, SB13, and HB 207.
This is a HUGE undertaking and we are going to need everyone to participate because we will need to get 180,000 signatures per petition throughout the state by June 16. I realize it is a large number but if everyone participates WE CAN GET IT DONE! It is time we rise up and take back what is ours. New Mexico, Are You Ready to Rumble? It’s time!
