The persistent cartel violence and Mexico’s middling economic performance were the main issues on voters’ minds.
Julio García, a Mexico City office worker, said he was voting for the opposition in Mexico City’s central San Rafael neighborhood. “They’ve robbed me twice at gunpoint. Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as Mexico’s first woman president in an historic landslide win.
Mexico’s official electoral authority said preliminary results showed the 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico City winning between 58% and 60% of the vote in Sunday’s election.
That gives her a lead of about 30 percentage points over her main rival, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez. More Here
This is an important news story! Claudia Sheinbaum, hopefully and apparently, will bring a freshness to the office of president in Mexico. The current administration has been weak (if not intentionally negligent) regarding both cartel violence and illegal immigration. I agree that her background, including her Jewish heritage, is a serious plus. May God bring her wisdom and strength as she will have to fight against entrenched and unhealthy politics, culture issues, and spiritual strongholds.
