87976944CS018_PRESIDENT_OBASupreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court recently gave a talk to the student of Yale University. During the talk,  she reviled her thinking on immigration.

When Sotomayor was asked about her use of the term “undocumented immigrant” as opposed to the term “illegal alien” her answer was very telling of her view of US law. The Supreme Court Justice characterized the issue as a regulatory problem and said labeling immigrants criminals seemed insulting to her.

“I think people then paint those individuals as something less than worthy human beings and it changes the conversation,” Sotomayor said.

Therein lies the heart of the problem on immigration. If a justice of the United States Supreme Court cannot differentiate a regulation from a law, what chance is there to discuss such issues with every day Americans.

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. -James 1:8

The difficulty here is that America is divided. We look at the same problem and cannot even agree on how to define that problem. There are many Americans who hold that the United States has sovereign borders and that a person regardless of the country of origin should ask permission to enter into that country. While other Americans believe that anyone should be allowed to come and go as they please, whether their intent is for good or evil. The rest just don’t care.

In the case of a Supreme Court Justice, it should be a matter of what the law states. If our immigration laws are not constitutional, then the court should rule them as such. Unfortunately, ideology trumps the law in the mind of the progressive justice. Once again we see lawlessness as He who restrains is removed.
