(Topeka, KS) — There will be no funeral for the controversial founder of Westboro Baptist Church. Fred Phelps died of natural causes Wednesday. The 84-year old Phelps was notorious for his scathing anti-gay views and rhetoric. He and his followers, mostly his extended family, picketed the funerals of AIDS victims and most controversially, fallen members of the U. S. military. Phelps was adamant that American combat deaths were God’s punishment for U.S. toleration of homosexuals. Despite its name, Westboro Baptist Church is NOT affiliated with any religious denomination.
