S. 1696: The Most Pro-Abortion Bill Ever
On Tuesday, July 15, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing for the so-called “Women’s Health Protection Act”. The bill, S. 1696, is written to ensure that virtually all abortion-related regulations/restrictions are struck down. If enacted, the WHPA would invalidate hundreds of abortion-related laws, including:
- Abortion bans (including 20-week bans, sex-selective bans, fetal pain legislation)
- Clinic regulations and physician-only requirements
- Admitting privilege requirements
- Regulations on abortion-inducing drugs (including webcam/telemedicine procedures)
- Reflection periods and other informed consent requirements
- Ultrasound requirements
- Limitations on the use of state funds and facilities for abortion training
Senator Cruz has asked for pro-life submissions and testimonies for the hearing. We have sent the following letter to Senator Cruz, to refer to publicly, as the portrait of what the nation will become should this bill pass tomorrow. “Dear Senator Cruz,
I write you today on behalf of the residents of New Mexico in hopes that our testimony will aid in the testimony against the bill S. 1696.
New Mexico is a state that has had unrestricted abortion since 1973 and as a result we have a clear image of what this means for women.
As a woman I have documented injuries other women have endured at unregulated abortion clinics in Albuquerque, NM. Since 2008 14 women have had injuries serious enough to be rushed to the local hospital emergency room from unregulated abortion clinics, one injury was on a 35 week pregnant woman whose uterus ruptured.
Abortion clinics in New Mexico are never inspected for cleanliness, emergency protocols or safety standards. Every other medical office is held to some kind of standard but in New Mexico abortion clinics fly under every radar. This endangers the lives of the women who mentioned above suffer because of a lack of restrictions.
We have encountered women who come to us after their abortions who admit that they were misinformed about the procedure, who have had serious medical complications and who ultimately wish that the law would have protected them.
If abortion clinics are not required to meet specific health and safety standards, they usually don’t. New Mexico’s lack of standards for abortion clinics has created a dangerous climate where women can be subjected to any manner of substandard or negligent practices and can never be held accountable for it. Nationally, if the protections that have been implemented all across the country are removed, unsuspecting women will ultimately pay the price for this lack of oversight with serious bodily injury and it is only a matter of time before one pays for it with her life.
Currently New Mexico is the portrait of what the rest of the nation will look like if S. 1696 passes. We do not want to see the nation take this far of a step backward in terms of allowing the abortion injury to reign supreme which ultimately puts the lives of women at risk.
