Inside the Israeli Elections!

 Israel is in the midst of another heated election season, with voting now only one month away. The party slates are set but the issues that will sway voters are just starting to crystallize. Some see it as a referendum on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his foreign policy moves over recent years. But surprisingly, most Israelis view this as a ballot over domestic concerns, and especially socio-economic issues. Now most of us outside Israel think voters there would give priority to the nation’s many steep security and diplomatic challenges. And if that were true, Netanyahu’s vast experience on these matters would seem to give him an advantage. But polls show this is a very close race and that the economy trumps all. Israelis, it turns out, also vote their pocket books! So just what issues are dominating the Israeli election campaign? Are voters more focused on the Palestinian conflict and the Iranian nuclear threat? Or are they more interested in economic issues like soaring food prices and the high costs of housing? And who has the best answers for solving these problems? Inside the Israeli Elections! That’s our focus this week here on Front Page Jerusalem. We’ll take you into the thick of the current campaign in Israel as candidates from four of the main parties engage in a heated election debate. We’ll hear from representatives of the Likud, Labor, Yesh Atid and Koolanuparties on the hot topics this election – including the big question of whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should go to Washington to deliver that controversial speech on Iran before a joint session of Congress. |

On today’s program we’re looking inside the Israeli election campaign. Our main feature takes us to a recent debate in Jerusalem where candidates from four of the main parties sparred over the issues in front of the foreign press corps. This included Tzachi Hanegbi of Likud, Hilik Bar of Labor, Rabbi Dov Lipman of Yesh Atid, and Dr. Michael Oren of Koolanu. As expected, the debate got very heated on both domestic and foreign policy issues, and especially whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should make that trip to Washington to warn Congress about a bad nuclear deal with Iran. Front Page senior producer David Parsons brings us this report.

Honoring a Christian Zionist Hero!
|
 Recently, the State of Israel held special ceremonies to honor a leading figure in Christian Zionist history, Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson. He was a British officer during World War One who commanded the Zion Mule Corps, the first Jewish military force since the Bar-Kokhba revolt nearly 2,000 years ago. In fact, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded Patterson for being the ‘godfather’ of today’s Israeli army. Now Patterson also led the Jewish Legion into battle in 1917, and after the war he became a strong supporter of the Zionist movement and its efforts to revive the Jewish nation back in the Land of Israel. But he died just before Israel was reborn in 1948, and was buried in far-away Los Angeles. Yet in December, Patterson’s dying wish was finally granted when Israeli leaders reburied his ashes alongside his troops in the Jewish Legion cemetery near Netanya. So just who was Col. John Henry Patterson? How important a figure was he in Israel’s modern history? How did his Jewish troops perform during World War One? And what is the special connection between Patterson and the Netanyahu family? Honoring a Christian Zionist Hero! That’s our focus next week here on Front Page Jerusalem. We’ll look back at the life and military career of Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson and his unique role in Israel’s modern history. Our special guest will be Jerry Klinger, president of the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation. Jerry was the key player in making sure Patterson was reburied alongside his troops, and he will tell us more about why Israel and particularly Prime Minister Netanyahu were so keen to honor this important Christian Zionist figure. |
