Rangers designated hitter Lance Berkman donated a fire truck to the city of West as it recovers from the deadly fertilizer plant explosion, the Rangers announced.
The West Volunteer Fire Department lost several of its trucks in the April 17 blast, which killed 15 people, including five firemen from the department.
Berkman made the donation with the help of the Arlington Fire Department, which helped find and refurbish the truck. It was presented during Saturday’s game, which the Rangers deemed “City of West” night.
West Volunteer Fire Department and much of the town attended the game against the Houston Astros.
Money to purchase an additional fire truck was also donated Tuesday night at the West City Council meeting.
Central Texas Iron Works, which employed two firefighters who died in the blast, gave the city $45,950 and earmarked it for a brush fire truck.
The truck honor’s Robert and Doug Snokhous, brothers and volunteer firefighters who were known for their enthusiasm for responding to emergencies.
The men’s wives and family members attended the City Council meeting for the emotional presentation. Afterwards employees from Central Texas Iron Works stopped to hug and comfort them. West Mayor Tommy Muska also thanked the company for the donation on behalf of the Steel Industry West Relief Fund.
“This truck will be a tribute to them for a long time,” Muska said.
