Reports from Western diplomats indicate that several world powers are preparing to lift economic and political sanctions on Iran if ongoing talks aimed at reaching an agreement over the Islamic Republic’s renegade nuclear program are successful. The talks are aimed at pushing forward UN Security Council resolutions overturning previous resolutions which imposed the sanctions, as well as an arms embargo. If successful, the effort would make it very difficult to reinstate sections on Iran in the future, even if it did not honor the terms of a nuclear agreement. “There is an interesting question about whether, if the Security Council endorses the deal, that stops Congress undermining the deal,” a Western diplomat said.
