Liz Cheney announced she will run for Sen. Mike Enzi’s seat in the 2014 congressional election on Tuesday, setting the stage for a primary battle between two longstanding names in Wyoming politics.

The announcement highlights the end of speculation about Cheney’s political pursuits in Wyoming and the beginning of a dog fight for money and political standing within the state’s conservative rankings.

The decision by Cheney to run not only thrusts her family name back into the spotlight five years after her father, Dick Cheney, left office as vice president, but it will create a primary where Wyomingites are forced to choose between the quiet senator from Gillette or the daughter of the controversial vice president.

The move by Cheney to announce a candidacy marks a rare occasion in American politics in which a sitting senator with good approval ratings will be challenged, said James King, political science department head at the University of Wyoming.

“It will spark conflict within the Republican party,” King said. “Enzi has his backers. Ms. Cheney has established sufficient contacts for her to think she can have a successful run. But I don’t see this as the type of race where it will split the door for a Democratic candidate to walk in and win.”
