I called 23 Albuquerque churches this afternoon on behalf of ABQ Voters for the late term abortion ban. Out of the 23 churches, 2 of the voice mailboxes were full so I could not leave a message. Several churches had a machine recorded greeting so I was able to leave a message. Out of the churches where a receptionist answered the phone, only ONE of them went and got the minister and put him on the phone, and that minister was pro-life, and said his church was against abortion. All the others answered the question “Is your church a pro-life church?” with:
– “Ooh, I’m not sure.”
– “Well, I don’t know how to answer that question, I’m only a receptionist.”
– “I don’t think we have a position on that one way or the other.”
– “That’s a good question…I don’t know.”
FRUSTRATING to say the least! How has the Church become so apathetic on a literal life and death issue? There is much praying and educating to be done!

Somebody has got to answer the call to the church 24/7. An answering service or directed to a cell phone. I know Pastor Jim Montoya of the Open Door Church of God in Los Lunas a small church, has the calls go to his cell phone. Pastor Paul Holt the same thing at the First Baptist Church in Magdalena. I have all calls to FGGAM come into my cell so I can answer 24/7. There was a day when the Church did not close it’s doors, they were open all the time to people to come in and pray, the Church must at least answer the phone and have answers for people. This may be one of the reasons that Church attendance in America is at best 18% on Sundays! People want a connection, they want us available at all times. With today’s modern technology and cell phones, no excuses. Even if you have a small Church, do what pastor Jim and Paul do, have the cell phone and then pass it off to other leaders in the Church on a rotation basis.
Other examples Pastor Bill Ruhl of Global Destiny Ministries in Albuquerque and Pastor Barbara Gould of Emmanuel Ministries International in Rio Rancho also have all calls go to their cell phones.
I don’t have an answer for someone answering the phone and not knowing if their Church is pro life or not.
Let us be in prayer.
